The fat lady can sing now

We will be coming home next week. After the Canadian government announcement on Monday, it’s hard to do anything else. We feel that soon the prison will need to close to visitors, and in fact should be by now. There have been no confirmed cases of the virus, but this is little comfort since no one has been tested.

We will be in Toronto on Friday the 27th, unless Ethiopian air cancels it’s flights.

The plan is for us not to return, so we will leave this beautiful country with too few memories.

I will be working in Malawi in a high security prison -- Chichiri prison in Blantyre. The prison has a school for the adult prisoner to complete high school.

  1. Steve,
I am so sad for you and Nora. We never know what is coming our way and nobody could have predicted this one. It certainly is a crazy time so getting back home safe has to be the priority. Safe travels! Looking forward to your post that says you are back on Canadian soil and doing fine!

    Take care!

    1. HI Barb,
Yes, this has been an odd experience. We had so many delays getting here and now this quick break. The reality will be unreal when we get to Toronto, so we will have an unsettling time when we return, too. Hope to be back in Woodstock in June and reconnect.

  2. Steve, Carol and I followed your posts – we have been so glad your eye stabilized and that you and Nora were doing so well in Malawi

We were planning to visit our nephew in Madagascar in October and were going to contact you to see if we might visit. Changed now.

Although it’s sad for both of you to be back so soon we’re glad you’ll be safe and sound.

Carol and I returned to WFS choir. I brought two extra bass friends and Carol brought a soprano in addition to our neighbour Ann Jacobson. Once Covid subsides, we can all start rehearsing again. Hope you’ll rejoin us at WFS.

After self-isolation at an appropriate time, you’ll probably be doing a presentation at Knox or a fund-raising dinner… we’ll be there.

We wish you both a safe journey.

    1. Hi Ken. Glad that you have been following our adventures. It has been quite a trip, with many delays and then this quick cutoff. I’m looking forward to getting back into the WFS. I had intended to join a choir here, but when we didn’t even arrive until November, that couldn’t happen. And then there is the Knox choir. We should be back in Woodstock for June.

  3. What a sad turn of events! We do look forward to seeing you here, but realize this is not the way it was planned. It reminds me suddenly of our last Bible study we had. It was all about the “detours” of life and how God is in every turn. And yet, we were also told that it’s important to grieve the losses so that they don’t get buried and “resurrect” again later and become too big to deal with. So – as we grieve your loss with you, we also rejoice that God is in this and He will take care of you wherever you go/are. Praying for a safe return and a good adjustment back to this western world.

    1. thank you Vera. We have been caught up in quite a few things that have delayed and now shortened our work here. We are looking forward to getting home and getting back to “normal”, though. It will be soon.

  4. Hi Steve & Nora: How disappointing for you both to have to cut short your time in Malawi. Don & I have enjoyed thoroughly the blogs we have received. Every day brought new experiences (& unusual ones). I look forward to having you back as Vocal Students whenever you return to Woodstock.
We have not received cancellation notice re our Safari to Kenya in June. Luckily, we have travel cancellation plus take out Health Insurance for one year at a time. We had it for our Trip to Scandinavian Capitals in Sept.-Oct.
Take good care on your return trip home, stay healthy. Vertual Hugs, Pam & Don Moore.

  5. Sorry that you need to come home. Hope you can make all the arrangements alright. Safe travels.

We were to return to Waterloo today from MO after visiting our daughter and family. But we came home on Tuesday instead, driving the 15 hours in one go. Next week we were to fly via Amsterdam to Ghana to visit our son and family. That has all been cancelled, and our son and two children should be landing in a few minutes in Toronto having been evacuated via Addis Ababa. Mark’s wife Sara has to stay in Accra because she is the Canadian high commissioner along with 5 others. All the rest of the staff and families of the HC have been evacuated.

God have mercy on Malawi and on all of us.

    1. Hi Ron. We too will fly home through Addis Ababa. Not sure why Ethiopian air is still flying, but they do a lot of canceling.
We are looking forward to getting home, now that we have decided to do so. It was decided for us. But the cold! It’s below freezing there and we get chilled in the low 20s.
